A top general in Russia’s GRU, its military intelligence agency, was shot outside a residential building in Moscow on Friday morning in an attempted assassination.
Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, Russian investigators said. The suspect has not yet been identified and is at large.
Alekseyev is the deputy head of the GRU.
Though the motive is not immediately known, there have been regular assassination attempts against Russian military officials over the course of the war in Ukraine.
Alekseyev had played a prominent role in negotiations with the Wagner Group, a private military company, during its rebellion in 2023.
