The 31st annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards took place on Sunday, February 23, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, recognizing the best performances in film and television from last year.

The ceremony, streamed live on Netflix, saw Timothée Chalamet’s surprise win for A Complete Unknown, where he portrayed Bob Dylan, beating frontrunner Adrien Brody, who had been the favorite after winning at multiple other awards shows.

Chalamet, visibly moved as he took the stage, acknowledged the years of dedication he put into the role.

“I was not expecting this at all. I know the classiest thing would be to downplay the effort that went into this role and how much this means to me. But the truth is it was five-and-a-half years of my life. I poured everything I had into playing this incomparable artist, Mr. Bob Dylan, a true American hero, and it was the honor of a lifetime playing him,” he said, according to Billboard.

The night also marked a first-time ensemble win for Only Murders in the Building, after three previous losses to Ted Lasso, Abbott Elementary and The Bear. Selena Gomez, accepting on behalf of the cast, joked: “We never win. This is so weird. Marty [Short] and Steve [Martin] aren’t here because they don’t really care,” as reported by Billboard.

Meanwhile, Wicked, which had received five nominations, left empty-handed.

In the biggest category of the night, “Conclave” won Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture, while “Shōgun” dominated TV categories, securing four awards, including Best Ensemble in a Drama Series.
