Last week, multiple reports surfaced that veteran NFL quarterback Derek Carr was considering unretiring this offseason and playing for another team in 2026.

Carr retired last year amid issues with his right shoulder. The New Orleans Saints hold the rights to Carr.

In 2023, Carr signed a four-year deal with the Saints worth $150 million, with $100 million guaranteed.

If Carr were to unretire, New Orleans doesn’t appear ready to start the 2014 second-round pick by the Oakland Raiders. Second-year head coach Kellen Moore wants to see what 2025 second-round pick Tyler Shough can do under center in the upcoming season.

Per Jason La Canfora of SportsBoom, multiple teams who need a quarterback this offseason have “no appetite” for Carr despite a lack of qualified signal-callers available in the draft and free agency.

An NFL general manager suggested the rumors around Carr were being taken more seriously by the media than league front offices.

Other teams don’t want to get stuck paying a high price for Carr, who might not be the same quarterback he once was after returning from an injury that caused him to retire last offseason.

“The Saints don’t have a market for him,” the general manager told La Canfora. “That’s a really bad contract. He’s going to stay retired.”

It would be bad news for the Saints if no teams were interested in trading for the four-time Pro Bowl quarterback. The Saints signed Carr to an expensive contract and failed to make the playoffs with him on the sideline for two seasons.

Carr went 14-13 as a starter during his two seasons with the Saints.

Ideally, New Orleans would receive a 2026 NFL Draft pick for the veteran quarterback to help build in the second season of Moore and Shough.

Instead, it’s likely that the Saints will have to hold onto the rights of the once promising quarterback.
