The husband of Vyleen White, who was fatally stabbed in a Redbank Plains shopping centre this year, has welcomed the increased focus on policing.
But Victor White, who has campaigned for tougher laws since his wife’s death and attended the LNP campaign launch, now wants police to be able to wand students for knives in schools.
“The more police you have, it puts people on notice, ‘if I’m carrying a knife I could get caught any minute here’,” White told Nine News.
“Personally, I reckon Jack’s Law (which allows police to wand for weapons without a warrant) should be extended to all schools, because that’s where the juveniles start from.”
Police powers in relation to wanding were extended to shopping centres in August, six months after Vyleen White’s death.
A recent four-day police operation in Ipswich resulted in three knives being seized.
Premier David Crisafulli was asked during the election campaign about wanding in schools and said “we’re open-minded about how Jack’s Law can be used in other settings”.
