Buckle up, my babies: the most life-altering astrological event of the year is upon us.

On Saturday, May 17, Uranus — our side-spinning planet of rebellion, liberation and chaos with a capital C — aligns with the sun, our luminary of identity in the pleasure pastures of Taurus.

Uranus conjunct sun transit

A conjunction like the one we will experience this weekend occurs when two planetary bodies meet at the same degree of the same zodiac sign. As a result of this tango, the potency of each is amplified by the other.

When Uranus and the sun join forces in the fixed earth of Taurus, it can feel like the ground beneath us is moving, and the foundations we have come to rely on are crumbling.

Uranus is known as “The Great Awakener” for its capacity to disrupt, destroy, liberate and cast us out and anew. In kind, this soul-quaking registers at the precise degree we need to break free from complacency.

If the sun gives us life, Uranus shocks us into feeling fully alive.

Uranus takes aim at the status quo, the complacent, and the inauthentic in our lives, shaking loose whatever we have failed to freely surrender.

This conjunction is something of a portal opening that can disrupt routine and open our minds to higher consciousness, especially for fixed signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius.

If the sun gives us life, Uranus shocks us into feeling fully alive.

For change to be initiated and truth to rise, something has to shift or shed — and Uranus rattles the cage and burns the boats.

In Greek myth, Uranus, born from primeval chaos, is the god of the sky. One half of the first couple, Uranus, was the mate of Gaia, aka Mother Earth. Uranus was eventually castrated by his child, Cronus, thereby dividing heaven and earth.

In relation to Uranus in Taurus, a feminine earth sign, we can see this conjunction as the reunification of this OG coupling, wherein new life is wrought from the friction and union between wildly different but equally boundless elemental forces.

Sun conjunct Uranus in Taurus

Uranus has been in Taurus since May 2018 and, beyond a brief dip into Gemini from July to November of this year, the planet will remain in the sign of the bull through April 2026.

Uranus equals upheaval, and Taurus is related to value and resources, the tangible, the edible, and the bounty of the earth. Thus, our relationship to value and resources has been, and will continue to be, rocked by Uranus’ transit through Taurus.

Fun or not-so-fun fact: the last time Uranus was in Taurus was from 1934 to 1941, a span of years that gave rise to the Great Depression.

Uranus is the wake-up call, the jolt and the bolt of divine inspiration and sacred instigation, he who destabilizes so that we can find our footing on a truer path — and never is this electricity more powerful than during a sun/Uranus conjunction.

Uncomfortable truths with the potential to ruin/redirect will undoubtedly be revealed this weekend, particularly on the heels of the full flower moon in Scorpio. Still, many of the changes initiated during this transit will play out in the weeks and months to come.

On a collective level, this conjunction could seed or bring to the surface shocking changes related to finances, natural resources, and world leadership. On a personal level, the energy can translate to restlessness and agitation.

Meaning of sun conjunct Uranus in Taurus

Change is coming, folks, but you don’t need to court risky business or rebel without cause or conviction.

Uranus is never subtle, and while the shock-and-awe tactics of the planet inevitably leave us stunned and stumbling, so, too, do they lead us home to a more authentic version of ourselves.

The brilliant writer and astrologer Lilly Welch shares, “Sun conjunct Uranus forces us to be present, and it’s usually slightly beyond our capacity, feeling a little wrong or too big. This can definitely encourage anxiety; the primal urge for safety doesn’t always like this type of vulnerability. But the chaos gives us room to grow and adapt. It forces us to contend with our needs and the needs of those around us.

“It believes in our resilience (the sun) to honesty (Uranus). This is how we evolve as individuals and as a species. If your world is splitting in two, choose the side that resembles your truth.”

Trust that while it feels like everything is changing without our consent, these shifts are always and ever in service of our evolution. Loosen the reins, kiss chaos on its leather eye patch, and ride the lightning.

Because this conjunction is conjuncting in a fixed sign, those with major placements in Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and/or Aquarius will feel the electricity of this transit most acutely.
