A thrifter who stumbled on a bracelet priced at $3.99 during an awkward stop at a local secondhand store said the purchase quickly turned from a strange shopping experience into a surprising win after a quick Google search revealed similar pieces selling for hundreds of dollars.

“Weird shopping experience but amazing bracelet found,” the shopper wrote, recounting the story in a post shared to Reddit under u/United_Cream4616 on March 17.

, which has since been upvoted more than 200 times, included an image of the silver bracelet in hand, its clasp engraved with the name “Dawkins,” and a price tag reading $3.99. A second image showed search results listing the same bracelet secondhand for between $199 and $450 on different reseller sites.

The thrifter said the visit to the store nearly ended before the bracelet was ever purchased. In the post, the shopper described being put off by the condition of the shop and the behavior of two employees behind the counter.

“Nothing was really clean or organized in the SLIGHTEST,” the shopper said, adding that while they consider themselves “an avid thrifter,” the store “was kind of giving [them] the ick a little bit.”

According to the account, the uncomfortable atmosphere escalated while browsing the jewelry section. The shopper said they were alone in the store with one other customer and the two employees, who appeared to be romantically involved.

“They kept kissing behind the counter and just being weird,” the thrifter wrote, saying the behavior felt awkward while trying to shop.

When the bracelet caught their eye, the thrifter asked to take a closer look. The interaction that followed was enough to prompt them to leave without buying it.

“I was really uncomfortable,” the shopper said, though they later described the moment as “funny looking back.”

After stepping next door to a Dollar Tree, the bracelet stayed on their mind. The shopper returned, bought it, and left quickly. Back in the car, the story took a turn. The thrifter said they usually avoid costume jewelry because of a skin allergy, but upon closer inspection noticed a small symbol indicating the bracelet was made of real gold.

“I was so excited,” the thrifter said.

A Google search soon followed, revealing listings for the same bracelet selling for several hundred dollars.

“Some people selling around $200–$400 and I only got it for four dollars,” they added.

The Reddit post resonated with viewers, many of whom reacted with amusement at the chaotic thrift store encounter and excitement over the unexpected find.

For the thrifter, the experience ended on a high note despite the discomfort that came before it.

“Long story short I’m really happy I went back in,” the shopper wrote, adding that while the employees “definitely need a reality check,” the experience made for a funny story with a good ending.
