If you’re finding today’s Wordle particularly difficult, Newsweek has some hints that will help you determine the answer.
Josh Wardle, a Welsh-born software engineer based in New York City, perfected Wordle during the COVID-19 lockdowns before releasing it to the public in October 2021.
Following its public debut, Wordle exploded from 90 users on November 1, 2021, to 300,000 on January 2, 2022. The New York Times purchased it for an undisclosed seven-figure sum soon after and it became the publication’s most popular game.
Players are given six chances to guess the daily five-letter word, and feedback is given each time the player submits a guess. A green box means that the correct letter was guessed in the correct place, a yellow box means you’ve guessed a letter that’s in the word, though it’s not in the right spot, and a gray box indicates the letter is not in today’s word at all.
If you’re not sure where to start, an expert in applied linguistics, Erhan Aslan, who teaches at the University of Reading in the U.K, previously provided some useful advice for Wordle players in an interview with Newsweek.
“One thing that I think is important in this game is the starting word chosen,” Aslan said. “Starting off with words that include commonly used vowels, for example, e and a, consonants such as r and t, and sound sequences might be helpful.
“Choosing a word that starts with q, z, j or x, for instance, may not be the best choice. You get more feedback after a few guesses. Users need to draw on some knowledge of phonics to narrow down or eliminate some words that they might be thinking.”

According to Merriam-Webster, it is defined as “to divide into two equal parts” and in relation to golf, is defined as “to play (a hole, round, or match) in the same number of strokes as one’s opponent.”
