President Donald Trump has called for a staffer to be “immediately fired” for making Republican Senator Mitch McConnell “look foolish and completely out of it” when he tried to stop him from ending a hearing because several senators still had questions.

Footage shows McConnell attempting to wrap up the proceedings in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, saying: “I’m going to ask Senator Murkowski to wrap up. Thank you all for being here.” A staffer then places a hand on McConnell’s shoulder and says: “Baldwin, Shaheen, and Kennedy still have questions.”

McConnell then says: “Yeah, obviously there’s not a whole lot of time for a second round, so we’ll get through everybody and Senator Murkowski, I’d appreciate your taking over.”

Responding to the incident, Trump wrote on Truth Social: “The guy that came up to Mitch McConnell today when McConnell thought the hearing was over, and started speaking in his ear for Mitch to belatedly introduce some other people, all Democrats and, by doing so, made Mitch look foolish and completely out of it, should be immediately fired!

“This was a case where Mitch wasn’t confused, he just didn’t understand why he was being asked to do something when it was too late, and people were wrapping up to leave — They wanted to go home.”

Trump named the staffer as Robert Karem, and called him a “Never Trumper” who “has tremendous Democrat support.”

McConnell has faced health challenges in recent years, including a fall in 2023 that left him with concussion, and two moments that year when he appeared to freeze when making public remarks.
