A U.S. appeals court on Friday upheld a lower court ruling that U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada and other countries under national emergency provisions are illegal.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C., in a split decision, said Trump exceeded his authority as president by imposing sweeping tariffs on Canada, Mexico, China and dozens of other trading partners.

The ruling did not strike down the tariffs immediately, however, allowing them to remain in place until Oct. 14 to allow for an expected appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
