Newark is going places.
United announced today that Newark International Airport will add direct service to several European hotspots starting next spring.
United unveiled the additions, the largest route announcement of its kind in the airline’s history, in an X video post, sharing that it will offer nonstop flights from Newark to Marseille, Valencia, Ibiza, Sardinia, Catania, Terceira, Luxembourg and Ljubljana, Slovenia as early as May of next year.
In the same post, United announced upcoming nonstop routes from San Francisco to Okinawa, Washington, DC, to Toulouse, Denver to Paris; LA to Osaka; and Washington, DC, to Milan.
In the accompanying advertisement, United vaunted that it is “flying to more destinations around the world than any other airline.”
New routes will kick off with the Newark to Luxembourg flight on May 2, 2027, followed by Newark to Ljubljana, Slovenia on May 12, Sardinia service on May 27, Catania on May 28, and Ibiza on May 31, 2027.
The EWR to Valencia route starts June 2, 2027; and the EWR to Marseille flight lifts off June 4, while the direct flight to Terceira, in the Azores, starts on June 9.
San Francisco to Okinawa launches March 27 and DC to Toulouse kicks off April 26.
The comments section was ablaze with travelers sharing their hype and their hot takes.
“These new routes are fire LA to Osaka and EWR to Sardinia…wow!” said one frequent flier
“Moving my family right next to Newark,” said another.
A third tagged Delta in their comment, writing “United trying hard to take my business here with all these NYC /EWR options!”
“Marseille and Toulouse in one go, summer 2027 is off to a great start,” remarked one commenter.
“Looks like United is really “UNITING the WORLD” & Making it GREAT!!! ….Now if they could just up their meals in all classes, they would win hands down,” shared another
Others were decidedly less supportive.
“Newark is so over-saturated and with many delays! Why more routes there?” questioned a dissenter.
“I can see making use of at least two of those routes. Sadly…EeeWR,” added a second, using the not-so-nice nickname for the Newark airport.
Last month, United revealed that later this year, travelers will be able to book a new Economy Plus option on the carrier’s upcoming Airbus A321XLR jets that swap the dreaded middle seat for extra personal space and a built-in shared table.
The latest cabin upgrade comes as United continues investing heavily in premium travel experiences.
The airline generated a record $59.1 billion in operating revenue in 2025 and earned $3.4 billion in net income while reducing its total debt to roughly $25 billion.
