Nearly half of all VCE exams were affected by questions leaked on the cover sheets of practice tests, the Victorian has government confirmed, as the head of the state’s curriculum resigns as a result of the scandal.
Education Minister Ben Carroll confirmed on Monday that Kylie White would leave her position as chief executive effective immediately. Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership chief, Dr Marcia Devlin, will replace her in an interim capacity.
Carroll said he was “extremely disappointed” after revelations that questions “hidden” on sample assessments later turned up in VCE exams.
“I apologise to all students impacted by the inadvertent publication of examination material on the exam cover sheets,” Carroll said.
He confirmed almost half of VCE exams have been affected by the breach, and reiterated comments last week that it was a publishing error because publishing guidelines were not followed.
“The error affected some 56 exams, out of a total of 116,” he said.
“In some cases, only one to two multiple choice questions were published, and in no cases were the full examinations published,” Carroll told reporters at a press conference this morning.
Despite the VCAA reassuring the minister that all affected examinations had had questions rewritten, that was not what happened, the minister confirmed.
Carroll said the curriculum authority did not make “sufficient enough” changes to all affected exams.
