Veteran Bowman Gray Stadium racer Robbie Brewer has died after a medical emergency led to a crash on Saturday night.
The 53-year-old was racing in the Sportsman division on Saturday 9 August when he crashed on a race restart on lap 16.
Running in fourth-place at the time, he crashed head-on into the wall, causing the No. 17 car to roll down the front stretch. Sources have told FloRacing that Brewer suffered from a heart attack which led to the head-on collision.
The on-site medical and rescue team worked to remove the roof of the car to get to Brewer before he was taken to a local hospital. His family confirmed his passing on Sunday morning.
Bowman Gray Stadium released the following statement:
“We are saddened by the passing of Robbie Brewer after he was transported to an area medical facility following an on-track medical incident during last night’s event at Bowman Gray Stadium.
“Robbie was a talented and passionate racer, and highly respected competitor among his peers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Robbie’s family and friends at this time.”
Brewer was a long-time racer at the Bowman Gray Stadium, with 11 wins in the Sportsman division to his name and the 2011 championship title in the same group. In addition, he held two 602 Modified Tour championships and the 602 Super Limited Series title in 2016. He had been part of the Bowman Gray Racing community for almost four decades.
Tributes have been pouring in for Brewer on social media.
“Rest in Peace Robbie Brewer. Man a tough night at the Stadium. Life is a vapor, here today and gone tomorrow. Hold your loved ones tight, and always do what you love!”
