Five people have been arrested after Geraldton man Ashley Wayne Cameron was shot in the leg in the early hours of Wednesday.
Cameron was taken to Geraldton Regional Hospital about 1am on Wednesday, after he was allegedly shot in the leg by a person known to him. His injuries were not life-threatening.
A WA Police spokesperson said officers responded to a report of a firearm incident on Allen Road in Moonyoonooka, which is about 12 kilometres outside the Geraldton town centre.
They arrived to find 32-year-old Cameron with a wound to his leg. The incident sparked a public safety warning in the early hours of Wednesday as a precaution.
“While this incident involves a firearm, there is no information to suggest an ongoing threat to the wider community”, a WA Police spokesperson said.
“Members of the public are not being asked to be alarmed, however they should remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police.”
Cameron is a Geraldton man and often travels between the state’s Pilbara, Goldfields and Mid West regions. He is a father and an artist.
The police spokesperson said five people were arrested on Hart Street in Utakarra about 10.30am on Wednesday, and were helping police with their inquiries.
On Wednesday, WA Attorney-General Tony Buti, who did not speak about Cameron’s identity, said it seemed he had been shot by “pellets” to his leg, rather than a bullet.
“All I know is that there was one person that was injured. Pellets, I think were shot,” he said.
“I think there are three offenders, and the police will provide a [later] update, I’m sure.”
Significant police resources have been deployed to the area, including the tactical response group.
Police advised extra resources had also been sent to nearby Utakarra. However, all roads remain open as normal, and the area is not considered to be in lockdown.
“Members of the public are asked to stay away from the area while police continue to respond to the incident,” a WA Police spokesperson said.
It is the second shooting incident in the Mid West this year.
In January, Kenneth Giles allegedly shot his partner in the hand in Mullewa and sparked an active shooting incident.
