An account on X, formerly Twitter, called Texas Patriot has triggered backlash and sparked accusations that it was not American after it recently criticized President Donald Trump.

However, there is no evidence to suggest that the account was run by someone from Pakistan, as claimed.

Why It Matters

Social media has proved useful for galvanizing the MAGA movement, with popular accounts often reacting to political developments from Trump’s feud with X owner Elon Musk to Trump’s policy agenda.

If it emerged that an account alleged to be American was actually based in another country, it would impact users’ trust. The confusion highlights the difficulty of verifying information on social media.

What To Know

The Texas Patriot account posted on X that if Trump involved America in war, “I’m done with him and his administration” and lambasted the president for not delivering on policies like “cheap gas” and “no taxes.”

The post triggered backlash. Posting on X, some popular MAGA accounts claimed that Texas Patriot was Pakistani. However, others said that he was from Texas and lives in Georgia and that saying he was from Pakistan was misinformation. The account has since been deleted.

Grok, an AI chatbot on X, said that the claim Texas Patriot was based in Pakistan “appears largely inaccurate.”

“No concrete evidence supports the Pakistani claim, and the account’s deletion doesn’t prove foreign operation,” it wrote. “Social media claims like this often lack verification, so skepticism is warranted. The evidence leans toward the account being American, but the deletion leaves some uncertainty. Check multiple sources before trusting such allegations.”

What People Are Saying

Catturd, a MAGA account with 3.7 million followers: “After Texas patriot got busted for being in Pakistan – he deletes his account – beware out there of frauds.”

Another conservative account, Proud Elephant, which has more than 500,000 followers: “Another fake MAGA influencer, Texas Patriot, who claimed to be based in Texas, has been EXPOSED as a Pakistani and has since DELETED their account.”

An account called Evil Texan, which has almost 80,000 followers, said Texas Patriot wasn’t Pakistani: “He’s an opinionated young man from Texas that lives in Georgia now,” the account wrote. “That didn’t stop a lot of large accounts from parroting that whole false narrative… but that’s just how this place is.”

What Happens Next

Whether Texas Patriot returns to X remains to be seen. Regardless, social media will remain a platform in which misinformation and rumor flourish.
