Dr. Erica Schwartz has been named director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), President Donald Trump announced on Thursday.
Trump described Schwartz as a physician with dual medical and legal training, holding an MD, JD and MPH. She attended Brown University for both college and medical school and previously served as a doctor in the U.S. military. During Trump’s first term, Schwartz worked as deputy surgeon general, a role that placed her inside the federal public health leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“She is a STAR!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social announcing Schwartz’s new position.
Trump also announced several other senior appointments, including Sean Slovenski as CDC deputy director and chief operating officer, Dr. Jennifer Shuford as deputy director and chief medical officer, and Dr. Sara Brenner as senior counselor for public health to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Trump said the new leadership team would work to restore what he called the CDC’s “gold standard of science,” signaling a shift away from policies implemented under the Biden administration.
This is a breaking story, and it will be updated as more information becomes available.
