An elderly woman is fighting for life after being hit by a bus during a torrential downpour in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on Saturday night.

Emergency services were called to Bayswater Avenue, Potts Point shortly after 7pm following reports a pedestrian had been struck while crossing the road.

Police said the woman, believed to be in her early 70s, was found trapped beneath the bus. Fire and Rescue NSW crews worked in heavy rain to free her before specialist NSW Ambulance paramedics treated her for severe head injuries.

She was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a critical condition.

The bus was operating as a rail replacement service due to train disruptions in the area at the time.
