A woman’s video has gone viral after revealing a surprising insight into the way some men approach weddings.

In a clip posted on TikTok, user Iluka (@ilukugh) shared that her boyfriend was asked to be a groomsman at his friend’s wedding through text.

“For all the brides worrying about how to ask to their future bridesmaids…My boyfriend just got asked to be a groomsman—in a group chat. Of which a yes [or] no answer he said has been ‘liking the message,'” Iluka captioned the video. “The male wedding experience should be studied.”

Since the video was posted on October 4, it has received 1.2 million views and over 70,000 likes.

The video shows Iluka’s boyfriend giving her a thumbs-up from the couch. Newsweek reached out to @ilukugh for comment via TikTok.

Viewers offered their own experiences of the men in their lives handling weddings with extreme nonchalance.

“My husband’s best man showed up to the rehearsal and said, ‘Who’s the best man?'” @kathleenkent wrote.

“My brother was in a wedding where no one ever asked him to be in it, three months before the groom texted him and said, ‘[Fiance] said we have to go get our suits this weekend,’ and he just said, ‘OK,'” @julia_santucci wrote.

Others in the comments section shared stories of the men in their lives declining offers to be best man or groomsman, with no detriment to their relationship with the groom.

“My friend said no to being the BEST MAN and his relationship with the groom did not change at all,” @indecisiverease wrote.

“My husband’s brother didn’t ever respond to being a groomsman. He didn’t come. He didn’t tell us he wasn’t going to come,” @leannarose95_ wrote. “Their relationship is fine.”

While Iluka’s boyfriend and his friends seem to have an unusually relaxed attitude to wedding planning, one person in the comments pointed out that their attitude appears particularly nonchalant because bridesmaid proposals have become incredibly over the top in recent years.

“Nobody did the elaborate bridesmaid proposal boxes and whatever until social media, people just asked,” @nahlol05 wrote.

Some viewers seemed to be advocating for a return to simply asking someone to be your bridesmaid or groomsman after watching the video. In an age where weddings are ever more elaborate and expensive, Iluka’s boyfriend might just be onto something.

User @janetltbh summed it up: “Life could be so simple.”
