A woman who adopted what she believed was a medium-sized puppy from a shelter quickly realized all was not as it seemed when her new pup did not stop growing.
Jillian Schrader, 32, and from New Hampshire, adopted Callie as a puppy, and has now gone viral as she showed the world what that puppy looks like now.
She explained in a now-viral video to her account @jillfacts on February 27 that she had recently adopted a dog who, going by the dog’s looks and curly fur, had assumed “was some sort of doodle mix.”
Doodle is the term given to a poodle crossed with another breed of dog, such as goldendoodles or Labradoodles, which are currently extremely popular among dog owners, though not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC).
As time has gone by, however, Schrader has been forced to accept that what she adopted is not a doodle—and is in fact a purebred giant breed.
“We suspected she would be like 50 lbs,” Schrader told the camera—before going to get her dog and showing just how big she is already.
Schrader than picked up Callie in her arms and—struggling due to her sheer size—carried her towards the camera.
Callie is in fact almost as tall as Schrader herself—who at 5’8″ is not a short woman—and is just seven months old, meaning she’s likely to grow even more.
“This is a puppy,” Schrader tells the camera as she holds the enormous dog in her arms. And Schrader then revealed what a DNA test on their “doodle” dog showed: Callie is in fact “100 percent giant schnauzer.”
“No doodle, no poodle, no little breed. 100 percent giant schnauzer,” she said.
Giant Schnauzers can grow up to 27 inches at the shoulder and weigh up to 95 pounds, according to the AKC—approximately double what Callie’s new owners had expected her to weigh as an adult dog.
The breed is known for being highly intelligent and loyal, and easily trainable, making them a good companion and vigilant watchdog if properly trained.
Schrader’s video had a big online reaction, viewed more than 1 million times and with close to 200,000 likes, as one user insisted: “I’d rather take the size and temperament of a giant schnauzer compared to a doodle any day! You won the lottery.”
“My parents had a giant schnauzer. He topped out around 120 lbs. Good luck,” another laughed, as another called Callie “a great thrift find.”
“Getting a giant schnauzer instead of a doodle is a MAJOR score,” another agreed, with one pointing out that a giant schnauzer could be a “great family dog” but “also a great protector.”
