It’s common advice to give new pets space to settle into their environment, and that’s exactly what one woman tried to do. Still, she kept a close eye on her Sphynx kitten by watching her explore upstairs through home‑security cameras linked to her phone.

What unfolded next left the owner shaken. In text layered over the TikTok footage, she wrote: “When you think you are being a good cat parent by watching the kitten you have had for [two] days on the landing through your phone when all of a sudden,” before the video cuts to a frightening moment involving her tiny kitten, Luna.

The footage begins innocently, with the kitten exploring an upstairs landing.

The camera then captures the tiny cat tumbling through a gap in the staircase and hitting the ground below, racking up almost 47,000 views. The text layered over the video readsLuna “falls down the bannisters and crashes to the floor.”

The owner can be seen leaping from her seat before freezing in shock, unable to move as she processes what she has just witnessed. Moments later, Luna limps into the living room, prompting a wave of panic from her owner.

The final photo shows a veterinarian holding Luna after the pair rushed to an emergency appointment to ensure she had not been seriously injured. The owner wrote in the caption: “I gave them [five] minutes to have a play parent free!”

Following the scare, she explained that the staircase has now been modified to prevent another accident.

She said in the caption: “We have now taped up the gap in between the panels so she is now safe from any more falls. So lucky she survived her fall and did not break any limbs!”

How to Kitten‑Proof Your Home

The incident has sparked a wider conversation about kitten safety, with many viewers urging new pet owners to take extra precautions. VCA Animal Hospital offers the following guidance for keeping curious young cats safe indoors:

  1. Give your kitten a quiet, child‑free, pet‑free space to unwind.
  2. Ensure all doors and windows latch securely so they can’t push them open and slip outside.
  3. Keep blind cords tied up and out of reach to prevent strangling hazards.
  4. Unplug or hide loose electrical cords to avoid chewing and shock risks.
  5. Seal any gaps in walls, floors, or ceilings that a kitten could squeeze through.
  6. Move breakable items away from counter and shelf edges to prevent knock‑offs.
  7. Keep washer and dryer doors closed, and use a reminder to check inside before running them, since kittens may crawl in.

TikTok Reacts

While many viewers expressed concern for Luna, others were equally focused on the reaction of the household’s black‑and‑white cat, who witnessed the fall from nearby.

“Even the other cat panicked,” one user wrote. Another added, “I know!!! He was very concerned.”

“These bannisters are fun to the kittens, not so much for us,” one user said. “Mine keep poking his head through it and walking along it. I’m like nope so I add cushions/pillows and that didn’t work he laid on top of it, at one point the cushion was hanging off the edge and he was just resting on the top of it so we have to wrap it like you did!”

“Well, [eight] lives left,” joked a third commenter.

Newsweek reached out to @lunamcbrearty for comment via TikTok. We could not verify the details of the case.
