Internet users are in awe after a Florida mom-of-three shared how she landed her dream engagement ring—thanks to a neighbor’s fiancee deciding it wasn’t the one for her.

Reddit user u/Lonely-ex-cult-girl took to the subreddit r/EngagementRings to share her story, which quickly garnered over 13,000 upvotes. She described her street as something out of Pixar’s animated film Up, with her family living in a “tiny old house” surrounded by “streets of million dollar houses” in Southwest Florida. “It’s quite comical,” she wrote.

The Reddit user said that she got married at 19 and, at the time, didn’t have the money for a fancy ring. For 12 years, she had dreamed of an emerald cut diamond ring—a style known for its elegant, elongated rectangular shape and step-cut facets that create a hall-of-mirrors effect.

Her dream finally materialized in the most-unexpected way. A man living on another nearby street—where his home is currently on the market for $2.2 million—had commissioned a custom engagement ring. But his fiancee had a different vision.

“The ring was my dream. Emerald cut diamond! And here’s the kicker: it was in my exact ring size. 4.5!” the Reddit user wrote.

She offered the $400 she had been saving in her sock drawer, and to her surprise, he agreed.

“OMG [oh my God]! I could have NEVER afforded anything like this ever! It’s 1.62 carats color H and VS1 (I honestly don’t even know what any of that means haha) but he gave me the certificate of the gem grade and authenticity and everything!

“I can’t believe it! This is insane! Living next to millionaires has finally paid off! Hahahaha I’m sooo happy!” she added.

The ring features an emerald cut diamond set on a silver band—subtle, timeless, and everything she had envisioned.

Reddit users flooded the post with congratulations and admiration for the touching story.

“Beautiful!!! Congrats—how fortuitous. Since no one else has mentioned if it helps H refers to the color (nearly colorless aka more clear / white) and VS1 means very slightly included (aka no imperfections that are visible to the naked eye) so a wonderful quality stone!,” one user posted.

“That’s such a great story! It was meant to be! Also, this is the exact ring I think of when I think of classy, old money. Beautiful and stunning but very subtle at the same time. So happy for you,” wrote another.

Others echoed the sentiment, with one writing: “So pretty!!! It found you.

“This is. Wow. This is a novel come to life. I’m in awe. You deserve every bit of happiness you get from this ring and your marriage from here on out. It was meant to be. A late congratulations from me on your marriage and I hope you guys live happily ever after, it sounds like you guys certainly have worked hard enough and deserve at least that.”
