If Wordle remains unchecked on your list of things to accomplish today, Newsweek has all the information you need to secure a win.

The viral game has been popular since it was released to the public in 2021. In 2022, The New York Times purchased it from Wordle creator Josh Wardle for an undisclosed fee.

Erhan Aslan, who teaches applied linguistics at the University of Reading in the U.K., revealed why Wordle stands out among other online games.

“Word-based puzzles and games have been around for quite a while, and they are nothing new,” the associate professor told Newsweek in 2022. “What is different or new today is how and where people play games. Before the digital age, word puzzle games, particularly crossword puzzles, would usually appear in newspapers and magazines. People would do them while waiting for the bus or train, in the toilet, or just to kill time.”

Aslan added: “In today’s digital age, like many other things, many simple games like Wordle can be played online. I think that Wordle gains its popularity not only from its simple rules but also from its virality on social-media platforms as a result of people sharing/posting their scores to demonstrate a sense of accomplishment and validation.”

How To Play ‘Wordle’

Wordle players get six attempts to guess the daily five-letter word, and a handy color-coded system helps users narrow down what it could be. Green tiles let players know the letter is in the word and in the correct place; yellow tiles show the letter is in the term but is in the wrong position; and gray tiles behind each letter indicate that they are not in the word at all.

Players do not need a subscription to The New York Times, as the puzzle is free to all users. The game is also not timed.
