After a quiet offseason, it appears that one of the New York Yankees’ potential trade targets isn’t going anywhere.
The Yankees have had a quiet offseason, with Trent Grisham returning on the $22 million qualifying offer being the team’s biggest move. Though New York has not accomplished much this offseason, the team remains one of the potential suitors for some of the top available free agents, including Kyle Tucker, Cody Bellinger and Tatsuya Imai.
The Yankees could use another frontline starter like Imai, especially with ace Gerrit Cole not expected to be ready for the start of the season as he continues recovering from Tommy John surgery. If they don’t want to spend big in free agency as they pursue Tucker or Bellinger, the trade market could be their best option.
Before the trade deadline, the Yankees reportedly attempted to trade for Miami Marlins two-time All-Star Sandy Alcántara, but could not get a deal done. Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson reported Saturday that the Marlins likely won’t be moving the 30-year-old hurler this offseason unless an offer blows them away.
“Marlins will listen on Cabrera, but 2 suitors (Houston, Baltimore) are no longer involved and Marlins don’t want to sell short on him,” Jackson shared in a post to X. “They want to keep Alcantara (would have to take an incredible offer to even consider a deal), per source.”
Alcántara struggled this season, posting a 5.36 ERA with 142 strikeouts across 31 starts, but is only a few seasons removed from winning the National League Cy Young Award. The rise of Cam Schlittler is great for the Yankees, but their starting rotation still has question marks with Cole and Carlos Rodón set to miss time at the beginning of the season.
With Alcántara unavailable, New York will have to turn elsewhere if the team wants to bolster its starting rotation this offseason.
