When third baseman Oswald Cabrera suffered an ankle injury that will sideline him for the remainder of the season, the New York Yankees instantly had a problem at third base. The club is now having to rely on Jorbit Vivas and Oswald Peraza to play third base.

Those two aren’t exactly high-caliber players, and it leaves a bit of a hole in the Yankees lineup. That is why in this trade idea, New York pulls off a massive trade with the division rival Toronto Blue Jays to acquire shortstop Bo Bichette.

Bichette is in the final season of a three-year, $33.6 million contract and not much progress has been made toward an extension much like the one his teammate Vladimir Guerrero Jr. signed.

Because of this and because of Toronto already being two games under .500 and not looking like much of a playoff threat, a Bichette trade makes perfect sense. The Yankees swooping in and making a move with a division rival would prove just how serious they are about getting back to the World Series for the second consecutive season.

After hitting just .225 last season, a career worst, Bichette is back on track this year. In 187 at-bats, he has a .294 average with four home runs, 15 doubles and 22 RBIs. It appears Bichette has returned to the form that has allowed him to boast a career .290 batting average in seven seasons.

Bichette has enjoyed success at Yankee Stadium in his career, as he has a .302 average with 12 home runs and 43 RBI. His success in that stadium could be another reason that New York would try and make a move.

He would likely be asked to play third base, due to shortstop Anthony Volpe being a Gold Glove winner last season. Bichette has not played third base in the major leagues, meaning it would be similar to last season when the Yankees acquired Jazz Chisholm and asked him to play third base.

It is unclear if Toronto would be willing to move off Bichette, especially if it’s the Yankees that call about him. If they are, however, it could certainly cement New York as the favorites to represent the AL in the World Series.
