The New York Yankees caught some heat from one of their former players, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, on Tuesday when he said the Toronto Blue Jays were happy the Yankees advanced to play them in the postseason.

Kiner-Falefa was on the Blue Jays last season and said that while the Blue Jays were waiting to see whether they would play the Yankees or the Boston Red Sox in the American League Division Series, they were hoping the Yankees would win because they were an easier matchup. Aaron Boone responded to his comments on Wednesday.

“I guess he was right. A little surprising to hear IKF say that, but whatever,” Boone told reporters in a clip posted by SNY. “That’s fine.”

When asked if the comments bothered him, Boone said, “Not really, honestly. You’ve got to play who you play.”

The Yankees obviously lost to the Blue Jays. Kiner-Falefa is no stranger to the Yankees, having played for Boone for two seasons. The Yankees made the playoffs in 2022 with Kiner-Falefa on the team, but were swept by the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series.

Now a member of the Red Sox, Kiner-Falefa will get to see the Yankees plenty of times next season. Perhaps his comments will give the Yankees a little extra motivation.
