Joseph Contreras, 17-year-old son of former MLB All-Star and World Series champion José Contreras, reportedly is drawing attention from multiple MLB teams after an impressive debut at the World Baseball Classic against Team USA, including the Toronto Blue Jays.

Contreras entered the game in Brazil’s 15-5 loss to Team USA with his team down 2-1 in the second inning and had a surprisingly impressive outing. The right-handed hurler held Team USA to a scoreless inning, and only allowed one run across 1 1/3 innings pitched, even getting three-time MVP Aaron Judge to ground out into a double play.

Blue Jays insider Bob Elliott of Canadian Baseball Network reported that the team has been scouting Contreras ahead of the MLB Draft and will be closely evaluating the Vanderbilt commit throughout the WBC.

“Blue Jays scouts have been evaluating Georgia HSer RHP Joseph Contreras, son of former big leaguer Jose Contreras (78-67, 4.57 ERA in 11-year career),” Elliott wrote in a post to X on Thursday. “Joseph will pitch for Brazil as youngest player in WBC.”

Contreras ranks No. 47 on the MLB’s Top 100 Prospects list for the 2026 MLB draft and he could fit into the top two rounds of the draft, boasting a 6-foot-4 frame with a fastball that peaks around 98 MPH.

The Blue Jays arguably have one of the best rotations in the league, but have multiple key pitchers with contracts expiring after this season. Replenishing its farm system with a talented arm like Contreras, who already is getting the opportunity to pitch against top talent, would be a great decision for Toronto.
