The Michigan Wolverines fired Sherrone Moore just over two weeks ago after only two seasons as the program’s head coach, and on Friday, they officially found his replacement.

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel, who led the search process, decided to hire longtime Utah Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham to a five-year deal, bringing the 66-year-old coach to Ann Arbor.

Whittingham spent the past 21 seasons leading Utah and compiled a 177–88 record during that span. One of the most respected coaches in college football, Whittingham appears to have the full support of star quarterback Bryce Underwood, who was a critical piece for Michigan to retain this offseason.

Shortly after the announcement, Underwood shared Michigan’s official post as well as a photo of himself with Whittingham on his Instagram story, signaling his approval of the hire.

“If he stays, he will get developed and have success. More importantly, it will show character the NFL finds attractive in its draftees,” a fan said.

Someone else added, “Bryce knows how good things just got.”

Another person wrote, “I’m taking this as good news and I will not be talked out of that.”

“THE SHOW GOES ON,” one more fan commented.

Underwood received a significant NIL deal to come to Ann Arbor as a five-star freshman and led Michigan to a 9–3 record in his first season as the starter, despite some struggles in the passing game.

While Whittingham is known for dominating in the trenches and emphasizing the run game, he has also enjoyed success developing quarterbacks and building productive offenses capable of scoring points, which could be a good sign for Underwood’s growth in 2026 as a sophomore.
