A threat by Donald Trump to stall the opening of the new border crossing between Detroit and Ontario has been condemned as “insane” by the mayor of Windsor, the city on the Canadian side of the frontier.

The U.S. president said on Truth Social that he would block the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge spanning the Detroit River until the U.S. was “fully compensated” as he complained that the construction had no U.S. content, such as steel.

Despite Trump’s claim, Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens told Canadian outlet CBC that American steel was used on the American side of the bridge and expected it to open.

“It’s just insane, when I read that post I can’t believe what I’m reading, but it’s par for the course,” Dilkens said.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
