CHP launches 78-hour crackdown over Labor Day weekend

California Highway Patrol is urging those driving in the Golden State “to make responsible choices” during the Labor Day weekend while traveling on roads.

The highway patrol is launching a 78-hour Labor Day Holiday Enforcement Period (HEP) to ensure that drivers are not driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The crackdown begins on September 4 at 6:01 p.m. and will continue until 11:59 p.m. on September 7.

The CHP’s Holiday Enforcement Period runs alongside the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign from August 19 to September 7.

“There is no excuse for driving impaired. If you choose to drink or use a substance that affects your ability to drive, make a plan and stay out of the driver’s seat,” CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said in a statement.

Duryee added that one decision “could be the difference between everyone getting home safely and a tragedy that can change lives forever.”

The Los Angeles Police Department will also have additional officers on patrol from August 17 through Labor Day, looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

“Whether traveling locally or taking a longer road trip to see friends and family, please have a game plan for how to get home safely. There is never a good excuse for driving after drinking or using drugs that impair,” Commander Pasos, Commanding Officer, Traffic Group, said in a statement Wednesday.

Here is a tentative list of additional DUI checkpoints put in place by LAPD:

Thursday, September 1

• DUI Checkpoint from 6 PM to 11 PM at Florence Avenue and Central Avenue

Friday, September 2, 2026

• DUI Checkpoint from 6 PM to 11 PM at Alameda St and 3^rd Street
• DUI Checkpoint from 6 PM to 11 PM at Pacific Coast Highway and Frigate Avenue
• DUI Checkpoint from 6 PM to 11 PM at Glenoaks Boulevard and Van Nuys Boulevard
• DUI Checkpoint from 6 PM to 11 PM at Washington Boulevard and Yale Avenue

Saturday, September 3

• DUI Saturation Patrol from 6 PM to 2 AM in South Bureau
• DUI Checkpoint from 6 PM to 11 PM at Glenoaks Boulevard and Truesdale Street

Sunday, September 4

• DUI Saturation Patrol from 5 PM to 1 AM in Foothill Area
• DUI Saturation Patrol from 5 PM to 1 AM in Pacific Area

During last year’s 78-hour Labor Day enforcement period, CHP officers made over 1,200 DUI arrests as nearly 500 impaired-driving crashes left more than 270 people injured and eight dead across California.

These devastating figures underscore a persistent statewide crisis, highlighted by 2020 statistics where drunk driving accounted for 30 percent of all California traffic fatalities with 1,159 lives lost, according to LAPD.
