Baltimore Orioles ace Corbin Burnes is now an unrestricted free agent after pitching just one season with the Orioles. He was brought over in a huge blockbuster trade last offseason.
Now, Spotrac projects him to land a contract for six years, $180 million. Some insiders project Burnes to land a deal over $200 million and I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if his contract began with a two.
MLB Network’s Jon Morosi is reporting that two teams, the Baltimore Orioles and the Los Angeles Dodgers, “Stand above the others” in the sweepstakes to acquire Burnes.
“I think there are two teams that stand above the others. Those are the Baltimore Orioles and the Los Angeles Dodgers, but I was told by a source in the last 12 hours or so that nothing is getting finalized yet,” Morosi said on MLB Network. “He is still having broad interest around the Major Leagues right now.”
The Dodgers have been quietly considered in the race to acquire Burnes ever since Burnes made a cryptic Twitter/X post following Los Angeles’ World Series victory.
For the Orioles, they need to hand Burnes a blank check for two reasons. One is that they don’t have the pitching to let their ace walk away. The front office moved talented prospects to acquire Burnes and they can’t let it all be for nothing.
The second reason is if the Orioles let him land with the Dodgers, the rest of the league will be forced to watch the Dodgers win another World Series in 2025.
