An owner who woke up in the night to cook a brisket for six hours was left stunned by the carnage that unfolded when their dogs got into it.

TikTok user Monique Cobbin (@moniquecobbin) posted a video in February showing the aftermath of what was supposed to be an early-morning culinary effort. Her husband had got up especially at 3 a.m. to slow‑cook a large beef brisket and give it plenty of time to rest during the day, only to later discover that the couple’s two dogs had got to it first.

In the clip, torn packaging is strewn across the floor, and what remains of the brisket could be seen laying among it—far from the perfect meal they was initially planned. Meanwhile, the two culprits lounged on the couch, looking suspiciously relaxed. One was sitting perched on the headrest, while the other sprawled out on his back, both looking incredibly guilty at the time.

The text layered over the video reads: “When your husband wakes at 3am to cook a brisket for six hours.” In the caption, Cobbin joked, “who else has a naughty bordoodle?”—referring to her Border collie-poodle mix.

The video has left internet users in stitches (and some also in shock), generating over 204,500 views and more than 3,800 likes at the time of writing.

Newsweek has contacted Cobbin via TikTok for comment. We could not verify the details of the video.

Can Dogs Feel Guilty?

While Cobbin’s dogs certainly looked guilty, experts say these expressions are often misunderstood. The American Kennel Club (AKC) says research shows that what many interpret as a guilty look is actually a response to an owner’s reactions—not evidence that a canine understands right from wrong.

It is likely that dogs don’t feel guilt in the human sense, but they respond to human tone and body language instead. Their reactions may include offering appeasement behaviors—such as avoiding eye contact, tucking their tails, or lowering their bodies—rather than demonstrating an understanding of wrongdoing. Owners often interpret those responses as guilt, but perhaps that is overestimating a pup’s emotional understanding.

While the brisket may not have survived this particular ordeal, the viral moment has certainly given dog lovers everywhere a good laugh. It also offers a reminder that, guilty-looking or not, pets often communicate more with their body language than we realize.

In the days since the clip went viral, hundreds of TikTok users have flooded the comments to share their amusement at what the dogs got up to during the night. Indeed, some pet owners also shared their own similar experiences to sympathize with what Cobbin was going through.

One comment reads: “What makes you believe those innocent babies did this?”

Another TikTok user wrote: “And they didn’t even eat it…that’s the part that would get me.”

Some viewers came wholeheartedly to the dogs’ defense, as one person replied: “They innocent bro, they just chilling on the couch. Blame something/ someone else.”

Others offered Cobbin a more optimistic perspective: “Great news the dogs enjoy your cooking—that’s all that matters.”
