Police and local representatives are trying to calm the nerves of a community in Brisbane’s inner-south after an outbreak of fights at a local park.
Three teenage boys have been charged for their alleged role in the assault of two 16-year-old boys on the corner of Oxford Street and Stuart Street, next to Bulimba Memorial Park, on March 20.
On Saturday, a 16-year-old Bulimba boy was charged with one count of assaults occasioning bodily harm. Charges against a 15-year-old boy from Norman Park and a 14-year-old Bulimba boy followed the next day.
As part of their media release on the charges, police said they were conducting increased patrols in the park, and in a post on a local Facebook page, said they had established a mobile beat there.
“Following recent events, we would like to assure you that we deeply understand your concerns and are working to ensure the community is safe and feels safe,” police said.
Local state member, Labor’s Di Farmer, also took to Facebook, alongside Bulimba councillor Lucy Collier, in an attempt to quell worries.
“We’ve all been very upset about what has been happening in the park over the last few weeks,” Farmer said. “A lot of young people have been hurt.”
Collier and Farmer will hold a town hall on Wednesday at the St John’s Anglican church in on Oxford Street to discuss what they referred to as “a community problem with community solutions”.
“We’ve been working with council, local police and schools,” Collier said.
Police said anyone with further information about the fights is encouraged to get in touch.
