The Atlanta Dream trailed by as many as 18 points in the first half of their season opener against the Minnesota Lynx on May 9, but they fought back to win, 91-90.
The Dream overcame another 15-plus-point deficit to beat the Phoenix Mercury, 82-80, on Sunday afternoon. “Atlanta is 2-1 when trailing by 15+ so far this season,” ESPN’s Alexa Philippou wrote on X. “The rest of the WNBA is 0-23.”
Atlanta’s three-time All-Star guard Rhyne Howard thinks Angel Reese is the engine behind those comebacks.
“She’s doing all the little things we’ve not done in the past,” Howard said on the postgame broadcast. “Oftentimes, we would’ve folded, but because of the tenacity that she brings, because of the energy that she brings, we have no choice but to follow her.”
Howard added, “We’re continuing to lift her up. We’re continuing to let her know that we need her, and she’s coming up and showing it every day.”
Against Phoenix on Sunday, Reese posted her third double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The Chicago Sky traded Reese to the Dream in exchange for two first-round draft picks on April 6. The Sky drafted Reese out of LSU with the seventh overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, and she was a two-time All-Star and two-time rebounding leader in her first two seasons. But the Sky occupied the bottom of the WNBA standings in 2024 and 2025, and Reese wanted to win, as she’s explained many times since arriving in Atlanta.
So far, so good. The Dream have the league’s best record at 4-1.
