The Supreme Court agreed Monday to hear arguments over the Trump administration’s effort to end legal protections that allow people fleeing war and natural disasters in countries such as Haiti and Syria to live and work in the United States.

The Justice Department asked the justices to step in after lower courts blocked the administration from ending the protections. The conservative‑majority court has previously allowed immigration officials to terminate similar protections for about 600,000 people from Venezuela, a move that exposed them to possible deportation.
