President Donald Trump has told the FT that his “preference would be to take the oil” in Iran as one of his war aims. 

Trump’s war aims have shifted since the start of Operation Epic Fury launched on February 28, ranging from regime change, destruction of its missile capabilities to curbing its nuclear program. 

But as Tehran continues to block the Strait of Hormuz, and the priority for Trump has shifted to reopen the critical waterway through which one fifth of the world’s energy transits. 

Trump told the FT: “my favorite thing is to take the oil in Iran but some stupid people back in the US say: ‘why are you doing that?’ But they’re stupid people.” 

“Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t. We have a lot of options,” Trump told the FT, referring to the island through which most of Iran’s oil is exported.
