Walmart customers nationwide have been warned that two recalled products pose a risk of death, and have been urged to stop using them immediately, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Mom Genius, based in Georgia, announced a recall on October 9 of its retractable safety gates, saying that they violate mandatory standards for expansion gates and enclosures.

Calico Brands, based in California, also announced a recall on October 9 for its Scripto Premium Torch, saying that they violates safety standards for multipurpose lighters.

“At Mom Genius, the safety of our customers and their families is our highest priority. We initiated a voluntary recall of the Mom Genius Retractable Safety Mesh Gates in coordination with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to ensure that all consumers are protected and properly informed,” Mom Genius told Newsweek.

Newsweek has reached out to Calico Brands for comment by email.

Why It Matters

For the Mom Genius retractable safety gates, the CPSC warned that a child’s torso could “fit through the opening between the gate and the floor, posing a risk of serious injury or death due to entrapment.”

The CPSC said that the Scripto Premium Torch could pose the risk of “deadly fire and burn hazards to consumers.”

Consumers should disassemble and destroy the gate by cutting the mesh and submit a photo of the destroyed product, along with proof of purchase, to product-recall@momgenius.com. Once verified, a full refund will be issued within 7–10 business days through the original purchase method.

“We have removed this product from the market and will no longer be selling it. Our team is working closely with safety experts and regulatory partners to ensure that all future products meet or exceed applicable safety standards before release.”
