The Chicago White Sox have been a pleasant surprise through the first 57 games of the season, sitting at 30-27 overall and second in the AL Central standings.

A major reason for that success has been star first baseman Munetaka Murakami, who is in his first season after making the jump from Japan.

Murakami has already launched 20 home runs, tied for the American League lead, while slashing .240/.378/.560 across 246 plate appearances with 41 RBIs and 44 walks.

However, Murakami was recently placed on the 10-day injured list with a hamstring injury, and after further testing revealed a Grade 2 strain, White Sox manager Will Venable announced Saturday that the Japanese superstar is expected to miss approximately four to six weeks.

The 26-year-old sustained the injury during Friday’s 4-3 victory over the Tigers while attempting to run out a ground ball. Murakami appeared to pull up while running and exited the game in the third inning.

In his absence, the White Sox are expected to promote one of their top infield prospects, Jacob Gonzalez. The injury will also likely result in more playing time at first base for Miguel Vargas, who replaced Murakami at the position after he left Friday’s game.
